“God speed, Fire Ant,” Halo said as Beth allowed her AI to adjust her heading.
“It’s Beth.”
“Harmony,” Halo said.
Beth blinked her surprise and asked, “Harmony? That’s your real name?”
The other three laughed . . . too hard. They sounded as stressed as Beth was.
“My folks were Tannisters. All of us kids were named like that,” Halo . . . Harmony said.
“No wonder you became a pilot,” Beth said. “You needed another name.”
“Bingo!” Marmot said before adding, “And I’m Stacilyn.”
“Reece,” said Ringworm.
Beth waited a moment, then had to prod. “Tool?”
“Anna.”
“Well, all of you, thanks for the escort, but this is it. You know your orders.”
“This is stupid,” Halo—Beth decided that the Oscar Team leader was going to remain “Halo”—said. “For this to work . . .”
He was just repeating what was roiling around in Beth’s own thoughts, but she had to be the brave one—or at least sound like she was.
Already, Stacilyn, Reece, and Anna had broken off, making their loops so that any one of them could blow the gate from the moment Beth shot it until the forty-five seconds had passed.
Beth looked at her display. Two minutes and five seconds until she shot the gate. One minute and thirty-five seconds until she . . . she still couldn’t believe what she was about to do. Her heart started racing, and nausea threatened to make an appearance.
“Screw it,” she muttered, and she took off her neck-cracker, the helmet which was supposed to keep her brain from being fried from enemy energy weapons.
All against Navy regs, of course, but she didn’t want to puke, and she really didn’t think having the helmet on was going to make a hill of beans difference in what was going to happen. It wasn’t as if the helmet’s display was going to be useful.
She desperately wanted to take control of the Iho again, to veer off. Going into a dogfight, where she had control, was nothing compared to this. She was just a hunk of meat in the Mosquito, along for the ride. There wasn’t anything she could do now. She was committed.
With ten seconds left, she passed, “See you all back on the Forge. Keep a seat open for me in the galley!”
She received a chorus of replies before they were all cut off, and the Iho’s cockpit went dark. Completely dark. Her HUD was cut off, as was everything else.
Almost everything. The tiniest bit of power kept several of her passive scanners alive. She had more electrical impulses in her body at the moment.
And that thought filled her with panic. She grabbed her helmet and almost slammed it back on, shielding even her tiny amount of brain activity. It seemed crazy to think that her brainwaves could be picked up, but the science types didn’t know the answer to that, and they didn’t want to take any chances.
Her pulse raced higher as the Iho sped through space, hopefully in the lantern for the gate. But it wasn’t this gate that had her worried. It was the other one, the one through which Rip would be emerging.
